{"id":3125,"date":"2014-08-18T19:30:30","date_gmt":"2014-08-18T14:00:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/susanta.com\/blog\/?p=3125"},"modified":"2017-11-25T11:16:22","modified_gmt":"2017-11-25T05:46:22","slug":"medium-ios-app-usability-issues","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/susanta.org\/medium-ios-app-usability-issues\/","title":{"rendered":"Does Medium iOS App Have Usability Issues?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"intro\">Is Medium suffering from usability issues on handheld devices or just me?<\/p>\n<p>Medium is a pretty popular blogging platform founded by Twitter co-founders, Evan Williams and Biz Stone.<\/p>\n<p>Launched in 2012, Medium has become extremely popular among bloggers looking for a decent blogging platform.\u00a0 Although there are many other popular blogging platforms out there, Medium has carved a niche for itself by offering a clean interface aimed at improving user experience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Even if you\u2019re not into blogging, you\u2019re likely to fall in love with this platform for the minimalistic layout and great stories shared by a variety of writers from different walks of life.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Like any other blogging platform, Medium too has apps tailored for iOS (no Android apps as yet).\u00a0 However, they have limited features \u2013 you can\u2019t write a story using their apps, for example.<\/p>\n<p>Although I don\u2019t use Medium as much for writing as for reading stories, the fact that they don\u2019t mention it clearly in their app surprises me.<\/p>\n<p>While using Medium on my iPhone recently, I tried to locate the option to write and search stories of my liking. After struggling for nearly 15 minutes, I shared my frustrations on Twitter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Dear <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Medium\">@Medium<\/a>, while I&#8217;m a big fan of your product, I still cringe at the fact that I can&#8217;t find an option to write\/search a story at all \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susanta Sahoo (@sushantsahoo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sushantsahoo\/statuses\/500636138093035525\">August 16, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>The next day, I got a reply from Evan on Twitter.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ev\">@ev<\/a> When I tap open <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Medium\">@Medium<\/a> app on my iPhone\/iPad, I land on stories, but when I tap on logo, it shows only three options Read,Help,SignOut<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susanta Sahoo (@sushantsahoo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sushantsahoo\/statuses\/500813904251875329\">August 17, 2014<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\" data-conversation=\"none\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ev\">@ev<\/a> Only when I click on the Help option, I see the iOS FAQ Page with the logo on the top left corner. Clicking on it, I find my way back!<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susanta Sahoo (@sushantsahoo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sushantsahoo\/statuses\/500814500220522496\">August 17, 2014<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\" data-conversation=\"none\"><p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ev\">@ev<\/a> I personally feel this could pose a challenge to any new <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Medium\">@Medium<\/a> iOS user just as much as it did to me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susanta Sahoo (@sushantsahoo) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sushantsahoo\/statuses\/500815642514038784\">August 17, 2014<\/a>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" async=\"\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>His response made me wonder if I actually knew how to even use the app properly. I have to admit it was kind of embarrassing because I had been using the app for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>Upon digging deeper, finally, I was able to locate what I was looking for.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@sushantsahoo\/does-medium-ios-app-have-usability-issues-cabca3aa46af\">Here are some screenshots<\/a> if you have found similar difficulties in locating the menus of Medium app either on your iPhone or iPad.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>So What\u2019s Wrong with App\u2019s usability?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Well, first of all, every app should be designed for simplicity.<\/p>\n<p>And, if it\u2019s truly simple, even non-tech savvy users\u00a0should be able to use it without much hassle.<\/p>\n<p>If you look at Medium app on your iOS device, it requires you to click on Help (located between Read and Sign Out) to visit the FAQ section.<\/p>\n<p>While on FAQ page, you can see the Medium logo on the top left corner of the page. If you click on it, you can see the menu from where you can search stories as per your preferences among other things.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Personally, I think this is a huge usability issue since I would expect this feature should be made available above every page itself. This will help a user navigate to the menu to use other features.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Why this feature is hiding inside the FAQ page is beyond me.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Where\u2019s the Home Page?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is one of the FAQs available for the users in the iOS app.\u00a0 Here\u2019s what they say to answer this question:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Rather than bog you down with a homepage, we want to get you right into discovering the stories than matter to you.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>To me, this answer doesn\u2019t clearly say if there actually is a Home Page or not.<\/p>\n<p>As of a matter of fact, there is one.
